Juan Bonigno (J. Bonigno) is a 26-year-old songwriter from Dallas, TX. Born in Madrid, Spain, Juan moved with to Texas with his mother at the age of 5 and began writing songs by age 13. Playing in local Dallas bands in high-school, Juan began developing his indie-acoustic pop style. At 19 he made his way to Austin, TX for college. Enamored with the vibrant local music scene in Austin, he continued to experiment with song structures and musical styles, beginning to embrace his identity as an artist. He soon formed indie band Sea Engine and released the well-received Lukewarm Days EP in February of 2011.
Struggling to balance his musical passion with the get-a-real-job mentality of school, Juan left the promise of the Austin music scene upon graduating in 2012 for a traveling IT consulting job out of Dallas, TX. Traveling each week for four years straight, Bonigno was enabled to explore the country’s biggest cities and immerse himself in the environments that had inspired his idols with his headphones in practically permanently. Reminiscent of the lifestyle and friends he’d left behind in Austin, Juan continued coping with his identity struggle in the only way he knew how- making music.
He spent weekends writing and recording songs, focusing his efforts on a project with long-time drummer and producer Nick Dillon - the duo released the DIY self-titled Sea Engine LP online in February of 2015. Unable to schedule shows due to his chaotic travel schedule, Juan continued to coop himself up in his empty apartment on the weekends with sights newly set on recording a solo album.
Released in August 2015, Life Gets In The Way is the end-product of these sessions. Recorded almost entirely at home, these highly personal songs are inspired by a tale of first-world-struggle, complex international family life, and the introspective nature of constant travel. Written in cities across the US over several years, the songs are reflections of a man accepting his mundane fate. The raw nature of the vocals mixed with diverse instrumentation serves as a testament to the honest ambition of this talented young artist.
J. Bonigno is currently based out of Echo Park, CA. His second full-length solo effort "Dos" is due out Spring of 2017.
